This is a giant leap from the 26-week qualifying period that is currently in place, not to mention the other, secondary changes – for example, employers have to respond to such requests within a 2-month period now and require them to consult their employees over the matter before a rejection can be made.

Whilst your mind might jump straight to younger professionals wanting to work from home in their pyjamas twice a week, this move is primarily being celebrated by parents.

A prime figure in the campaign for such a shift is online influencer Anna Whitehouse, known largely by her blog, Mother Pukka. Her self-described ‘portal for news, events, reviews and honest comment for people who happen to be parents’ has championed a campaign titled ‘Flex Appeal’ since 2015, whereby Whitehouse cries out for “getting the best out of each individual […] The one rule for everyone has to go”.

Campaigns such as Flex Appeal reference economic studies which claim that flexible working has contributed £37 billion to the UK economy in the last year, thus arguing that a less rigid employment structure makes practical sense for the employee, and financial sense for the employer.

Whitehouse recently celebrated this change to flexible working requests on her Instagram to an audience of over 350,000 followers, acknowledging that it is not just parents looking to juggle the school run who will benefit, but also people with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and mental health problems

Whilst many are reluctant to allow remote or hybrid working now the world has opened back up post-pandemic, it appears that the option to work from home, job-share, and work compressed or staggered hours is very much a thing of the future.
